Structure of Foreign TV News About US Primaries

May 17, 2009

Earlier studies focused their investigations on 11 structural dimensions of newscasts: (a) newscast segments, (b) chronological placement, (c) item format, (d) newscast format, (e) presentation features, (f) focus: event vs. person, (g) newscast ending, (h) story style, (j) linguistic complexity, (k) number of news items, and (l) extensiveness. Our study investigated five major structural framing devices: (a) interview: reporter/sources, (b) report: live/pre-recorded, (d) quotes: seen/not seen, (e) sensationalism: indicator/level, and (f) conflict: interpersonal/social. We found that in comparison with US, 13 other countries used fewer structural framing devices, fewer indicators but higher level of sensationalism, and more pre-recorded report. Switzerland and Canada used fewer source interviews while 11 other countries used none.  Despite these differences, US and 13 other countries were largely similar in terms of focus on social conflict and use of “quoted and seen”.
