CALL FOR PAPERS

International Conference

Matters of Journalism: Understanding Professional Challenges and Dilemmas

Gdańsk, September 14 – 15, 2012

The Polish Communication Association and the Faculty of Philosophy, Sociology and Journalism at the University of Gdańsk invite paper and panel proposals for the international conference entitled “Matters of Journalism: Understanding Professional Challenges and Dilemmas” which will take place in Gdańsk on September 14 – 15, 2012 at the University of Gdańsk.

The conference is sponsored by the ECREA, the Journalism Studies Section of the ECREA and the Journalism Studies Division of the ICA.

Rationale

Journalism has experienced several transformation periods so far: every new medium brought new challenges for journalism practice. What is new this time, is the fact the audience members joined the news gathering, production and dissemination process. So- called ‘citizen journalism’ has been studied for a couple of years now. The findings showed that new technologies in the media allowed people to act like journalists and to some extent play their roles. However, the general conclusions seem to be rather optimistic for professional journalists. They may not be the only sources of information about the events around the world now, but they are still major gatekeepers. In fact, since the international flow of information significantly extended in the last decade and the number of information is more overwhelming than ever before, most of the audience members desperately need someone who will be able to select and order the events for them.

The aim of this conference is to contribute to our understanding of powers that influence journalism standards and routines. Hence, the participants of the conference will concentrate on such ‘traditional’ issues as: relations between politics and journalism, market – related aspects of journalism, organizational and professional factors. Furthermore, the questions about a digital challenges for the journalism practice will be raised. In order to do this, the conference will bring together a range of international scholars, drawn from representative disciplines in the media studies and journalism. The key questions during the debates would concern the roles of journalists. Who are they now? What are the audiences’ expectations towards journalists? What is the future of this profession?

We invite paper and panel proposals that cover the main themes below:

·Traditional and contemporary models of journalism

·Professional standards and values

·Professional roles and identities

·Journalism and politics

·The changing business of journalism

·Journalism practice around the world

·Digital challenges for journalism practice

·Online journalism

·Citizen journalism

·Ethics in new media

·Future of journalism

·Local journalism

Extended deadline for abstracts: May 31, 2011

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

As recent revolutionary movements in Egypt and other Arab countries have so powerfully demonstrated, digital and social media have enabled essential information – via mobile phones, blogs, online social networks, satellite TV, wikis, and user-generated news, photos and videos – to reach people who otherwise would have been disenfranchised.

That makes the theme of the 2011 Conference of the Arab-U.S. Association of Communication Educators (AUSACE) – Digital & Media Literacy: New Directions – even more relevant than it was when the call for papers was posted months ago.

AUSACE looks forward with great enthusiasm to offering a conference in Beirut that will stimulate important research and conversation about digital and social media and how the consumers of information brought to them by these new media access, use, and interact with digital media content and the networking opportunities they bring forth.

AUSACE conferences bring together a remarkable group of communication educators, scholars, and professionals once a year – from the United States and Arab countries, and from other parts of the world. Research papers, panels, and poster presentations will stimulate both scholarly and social discourse at the October 28-31 AUSACE conference.

I look forward to listening to your presentations and to debating the current topics that are shaping our worlds as we speak.

Dr. Judy VanSlyke Turk,
Professor, Virginia Commonwealth University and AUSACE President, 2010-2012.

Abstract submissions for research papers, panels, and poster presentations are now open (Full paper submission not required).

Communication and Social Change: New Marxist Perspectives

An International Academic Conference

May 13-14, 2011

Fudan University, Shanghai, China

Call for Papers

As neoliberal globalization reaches a critical juncture and as global political economic, social, cultural and ecological crises deepen, social scientists all over the world are facing profound challenges in analyzing the drastic changes in the world. Marxism, with its powerful critique of capitalism and its unyielding commitment to human emancipation, has not vanished with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Rather, it has been revitalized and reconstructed to tackle the problems of our times. The spectre of Marx haunts the world in variegated forms.

The world’s communication systems, which function as a technological infrastructure and an economic sector on the one hand, and as a cultural terrain and a cornerstone of democratic societies on the other, are also undergoing a profound process of transformation. Confusions and crises within the process have created a new sense of urgency for the explication of a whole range of historical and contemporary issues. Over the years, scholars within a broadly defined Marxian tradition have persistently dedicated themselves to advancing communication research as a critical praxis aiming at creating more just national and global communication orders. In doing so, the Marxian tradition has also made well-recognized contributions to enriching communication scholarship.

In order to promote dialogue among critical communication scholars and contribute to advancing global communication scholarship that is capable of not only addressing the multifaceted problems of globalized informational capitalism, but also grasping the complicated dynamics of ongoing social upheavals, the State Institute for Innovations in the Studies of Journalism, Communication and Mediated Society at Fudan University (SJCM), in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Intellectual History at Fudan University, will host a conference entitled “Communication and Social Change: New Marxist Perspectives” from May 13-14, 2011 at Fudan University, Shanghai.

The conference, which has already confirmed the participation of more than 10 leading international scholars with specializations in different areas and regions of the world, solicits the submission of paper proposals in any aspect of communication and social change in global, regional, national and local contexts. We are particularly interested in papers addressing the following topics:

Marxism and Critical Theories on Communication and Social Change

Information, Media and Cultural Industries and the Global Economic Crisis

Critical Perspectives on Communication Law, Policy and Regulation

Information Societies in the Global South and the Future of Rural Societies from Social Justice and Critical Ecological Perspectives

Communication, Labor, Peasants, Urban Youth, and the New Dynamics of Social Struggle

The Communication and Cultural Politics of Empire, Nation, Class, Race and Gender

Communication, Emancipation, and the Possibilities and Limits of Identity Politics

Communication and Cultural Rights and Global Justice

Marxist Methodologies and the Critical Application of Empirical Methods

10. Revitalizing and Sharpening the Critical Edge of Cultural Studies

11. Critical Perspectives on Media Education

12. Universities, the Politics of Intellectual Publicity, and Transnational Knowledge Flows in the Age of Networked Communication

13. The Public Nature of Communication Media in China: Historical Legacies and Contemporary Crises

14. The Position of China’s Communication Industries within the Global Political Economy

15. Marxism, the History of Chinese Media Scholarship, and the History of Chinese Communication Industries

Please submit an abstract of around 300 words by March 31, 2011 to Dr. Jia Min (jiamin0120@gmail.com) at the SJCM. Successful authors will be notified by April 8, 2011.

The telecommunications industry has experienced radical change in the last decade. From a technology perspective, the transition towards next generation network (NGN) has dramatically accelerated in terms of quality, speed and ubiquity. “Internet of Things” is becoming a reality, and communication is no longer limited to person-to-person interactions.

From a business perspective, convergence is now a common phenomenon. Hardly any operator can claim itself as a pure telecommunications service provider. Innovative business models such as “Apple Store” have broken the walled garden of mobile operators and have made it possible for users to become application providers.

From a policy perspective, universal broadband access has been on the top agenda of more and more governments. In addition to facilitating Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), governments are trying hard to find creative ways to allocate more spectrum for wireless broadband access. Another concern of regulators is how to build trusted identities in cyberspace.

All these changes in telecommunications have significant implications to Chinese communities, be they individual economies in Great China or Chinese communities living in Western or other regions. For instance, what is the cultural implication of the fact that Internet-based TV broadcasting has enabled overseas Chinese to access almost every channel of China Central TV (CCTV) for free? What is the real value for farmers in rural China to access broadband Internet?

This special issue of Chinese Journal of Communication (CJoC) is to address the latest dynamics of telecommunications in Chinese communities from technology, business and policy perspectives. Topics could include but are not limited to:

Digital Divide

Diffusion of New Services in Great China and other Chinese Communities

Comparison of User Behavior of Chinese and Non-Chinese

Towards Next Generation Network: Related Issues

Media Convergence and Its Implications

Telecommunications Business Innovation and Its Economic, Social and Political Implications

Competition: New Players and New Platforms

User Roles and Social Networking

Internet Governance

Regulatory Framework in the Era of Convergence

Spectrum: Technical, Commercial and Regulatory Solutions

Transformation of Traditional Telecommunications Operators

Both qualitative and quantitative approaches to the issue are welcome. Collaboration of Chinese scholars and non-Chinese scholars are encouraged. The purpose is to address the relevantissues in Chinese communities from cross-national perspectives.

Submissions should conform to the editorial guidelines of Chinese Journal of Communication to be found at http://www.informaworld.com/cjoc under “Instructions for Authors.” Papers for consideration in this special edition should be e-mailed to xuyan@ust.hk.
